- Pause and find a comfortable posture
- Take a couple of deep breaths to settle the body and mind
- Contemplate this question - what is one thing in your life that you can rely, that is constant in your life, that is always present for you regardless of your circumstances?
- Open your left hand and visualize placing this "constant" in your left hand.
- Open your right hand, place it in front of you. In this hand, place any burdens that you are carrying. Whatever feels heavy for you. Imagine dropping it in this hand and closing the hand.
- Now place your left hand (the metaphorical "constant") beneath the right fist, allowing the right fisted hand to rest in the left hand, where it is supported.
- Sit for the next minute like this, sensing and imagining how the burdens you are carrying can be held in the supportive container of this constant in your life.
- Drop your hands. Take a deep breath in and out. Notice what, if anything, has shifted for you in your body, mind and heart.
This practice of the hand inside the hand can be used anywhere, anytime without anyone knowing. When you find yourself struggling, place the struggle in your right hand and let it be held by the gifts of your life.
